We've really seen an explosion of AI laws at the state level in the last year. In 2024 alone, there have been over 600 bills proposed at the state level on AI.
This is really challenging for companies to keep on top of the emerging legislation. I think what's helpful and what founders should know is that the laws are essentially pretty thematic. They fall into a couple of core buckets:
-
There are laws in relation to explainability - so ensuring that the AI system, you can explain how it works.
-
Labeling - ensuring that the AI content that is developed by AI has been labeled as such.
-
Safety - that the system has been built with safety in mind.
And so, companies that are developing AI or onboarding AI tools really need to think about building an AI compliance program that is built around core principles so that the systems and services that they build are flexible and will comply with the emerging legislative landscape.
