HM Treasury is consulting on the value case for a UK Green Taxonomy as part of the UK’s wider sustainable finance framework. The government wants to support investment into activities aligned with sustainability goals, and mitigate greenwashing. But it seeks views on whether a new taxonomy is the right way to complement existing policies.
Around 20 jurisdictions already have a government-endorsed taxonomy in place, and around 30 more are considering one. The consultation is particularly interested in views on whether a taxonomy would support the mobilisation of transition finance, or whether any existing or alternative policies would achieve the aims better. It also seeks input on use cases and the usefulness of a taxonomy in supporting the allocation of transition finance alongside transition planning. It then asks how any taxonomy, if the decision is to create one, should be designed and what governance and oversight measures should apply to it.
